At the period of Queen Olga's coronation, Greece saw the arrival of hundreds of refugees from Crete, mostly women and children who sought refuge in Greece following the bloody clashes with the Ottomans.

On November 23, 1867, just twelve days after her arrival, the Queen accepted the newly created "Ipeirothessalomakedoniki Committee" which sought her moral and financial assistance in order to relieve the Cretan refugees. The Queen responded immediately by placing the Committee under her High Protection and by donating 15,000 drachmas from her personal funds.
